Hammarstrand: A Village Born from Water
Hammarstrand has one of Europe’s most unique origins. Born from a 1796 natural disaster caused by a fatal engineering error, the village was built on the fertile bed of a suddenly drained lake. Today, it is a sporting hub famous for its world-class luge track and the “Elephant Mountain” ski slopes. Its most iconic landmark is the giant “HAMMARSTRAND” hillside sign—the largest of its kind in Europe—earning the village its nickname: the “Hollywood of Jämtland.”
