Traditions in Sweden
In Sweden, there's a tradition to celebrate together every month. That's what makes the country so unique!
January & February
January
Trettondedag Jul (Epiphany, January 6) – The end of the Christmas season.
Knutfesten (January 13) – "Tjugondag Knut," the day when the Christmas tree is taken down and children take candy from it.
February
Semmeldagen (Shrove Tuesday) – The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, when Swedes eat semlor: sweet rolls filled with almond paste and whipped cream.
March & April
March
Vårdagjämning (Spring Evening) – Often marked, especially in the north where the sun is slowly returning.
Sometimes Easter falls here: with brightly colored feathers, children dressed as "påskkärringar" (Easter witches) go door to door.
April
Påsk (Easter, often in April) – Yellow decorations, colorful eggs, and Easter buffets.
Valborg (April 30) – A large spring festival with bonfires and choirs to drive away the winter.
May & June
May
May 1st (Första maj) – Demonstrations and parades.
Ascension Day (Kristi himmelfärdsdag) – A popular day for visiting the countryside.
June
Sveriges Nationaldag (Sveriges Nationaldag, June 6) – National holiday with flags and often traditional clothing.
Midsummer (around June 21) – Dance around the maypole, flower wreaths, herring, potatoes, and strawberries.
July & August
July
Industry Month – Many Swedes take a holiday in July, traditionally a whole month off.
Summer traditions include barbecues, boating, and the celebration of the "Allemansrätten" (Allergy Councils).
August
Kräftskiva (Lobster Festival) – Enjoy a cozy lobster dinner with songs, hats, and schnapps.
Surströmmingspremiär (third Thursday in August) – Start of the fermented herring season.
September & October

Äppeldagar – Apple Days in southern Sweden, often with markets and cider.
Autumn traditions surrounding blueberry and mushroom picking.
October
All Saints' Day (All Saints' Day, first Saturday in November, sometimes late October) – Families visit cemeteries and leave candles.
Halloween is also becoming increasingly popular.
November & December
November
Fars Day (Father's Day, second Sunday in November) – Celebrated with breakfast and presents.
December
Luciadag (December 13) – Festival of Lights with Lucia processions, singing, and saffron buns (lussekatter).
Jul (December 24) – Big family celebration with Julbord (julbord), Christmas gifts, and TV traditions like watching Donald Duck at 3:00 PM.
Nyårsafton (December 31) – New Year's Eve with fireworks and festivities.
